Sports Inventors

Sports teaches you character, it teaches you to play by the rules, it teaches you to know what it feels like to win and lose-it teaches you about life.
-Billie Jean King

Can you create a new sport that other people would be excited to play? That might be a tall order for most of us as individuals, but when working with the right group it is amazing what we are capable of.

In Sports Inventors, campers will sample lots of different kinds of sports and games and discuss what makes each work well. Counselors will then guide them through a Design Thinking process to invent and test a brand new sport or game.

The Sports Inventors program is all about mixing fun and active play with practicing skills in creativity and collaboration. Campers will get their fill of activity and even competition each day while also stretching their creative sides.

Cornerstone Activity: Invent a new sport

Creating a new sport or game that is fun to play is no easy task. Sports require a balance of rules and boundaries that are both easy to understand and provide for interesting objectives. Many of our favorite sports have existed for hundreds of years, and we are still fine-tuning them today.

Campers will flex their skills in creativity, communication, and collaboration while following a Design Thinking process to create a new sport or game. Design Thinking is a powerful process that allows a group to work together to create something that no individual could have done by themselves. By the end of the week, campers will have gone through an iterative process to create, test, and improve a new sport or game of their own design.

Program Goals

Some campers just like to be active, so we have created a program that meets them where they are. Team Sports will challenge campers to think creatively, work together, and communicate well, while allowing them to learn and explore kinesthetically. Campers will experience working with a group to complete a project using a Design Thinking process, which will give them experience with a tool to work productively in groups and in being creators of their world.
